Big Data, 3D printing and Building Information Modeling (BIM) have transformed the industry of construction and brought it to the digital era. Besides speeding up the works, increasing their quality and optimizing the overall management of the organizations, the use of technology has also increased the levels of safety in calculations, construction and use of secure scaffolding.
Planning the construction of a building is one of the most important elements. The safety, speed, and productivity of the construction will set the success of the work. In order to minimize risks, experts have created systems that simulate the daily conditions a building is exposed to identify the hazards related to scaffolding.
Advances in BIM have allowed builders to optimize the resources and increase safety. In the study BIM-Based Planning of Temporary Structure for Construction Safety, engineers Kyungki Kim and Yong Cho indicate that the optimization engine generates alternative safe scaffolding plans. The research focused on the planning of temporary stair towers used in roof construction. For automation, a set of algorithms was created that analyze the geometric conditions in BIM, which generate the required stair towers and analyze their efficiency in safety.
Sensors for creating secure scaffolding
In research carried in the United States, the architectural engineer from the Pennsylvania State University, Xiao Yuan, developed a system of sensors based on 3d modeling named Cyber-Physical System (CPS) that sends an alert via cell phone to workers and managers of a construction site if they exceed the structural parameters.
Yuan’s work focused on placing sensors in structures to link them to virtual models and improve scaffolding, formworks and other temporary structures. The sensors work every two seconds to control the structural integrity of the scaffold according to the previously defined values. If a potential failure is discovered, an alert is generated in the 3D model for the supervisors to initiate the investigation.
BIM Objective
Risks linked to the use of scaffolding are hard to identify and analyze. BIM has been employed to improve security management in constructions, and its next goal is to develop an applicable model to the system of temporary scaffolding.
The primary objective is to gather all the information in detail to develop the system of secure scaffolding in constructions with identified requirements. Simulations based on potential hazard events are then carried out as a tool to find solutions.
The safety checklists, with information from the sensors for the 3D plane, which are derived from the BIM model, help security managers reduce the difficulties of implementing security regulations and improve the quality of resource management.
While technological systems are developed, accidents in the industry of construction will be minimized, and the costs and execution times of the works will be reduced.
