Scaffolding is the supporting framework to all the construction works. There are eight main types of scaffoldings i.e.,
- Access Scaffolding
- Suspended Scaffolding
- Trestle Scaffolding
- Cantilever Scaffolding
- Putlog/Single Scaffolding
- Double Scaffolding
- Steel Scaffolding
- Patented Scaffolding
Each of the aforementioned scaffolding systems are made from individual scaffolding components. These scaffolding parts are used to aid the temporary structure with great load-bearing capacities. We shall elaborate on each scaffolding component in this article.
What is Scaffolding?
Scaffolding is a temporary structure that is used to support workers and the loads on site. Scaffolds are widely used to get access to high heights. It aids the construction, maintenance, and repair processes. They are employed in adapted forms for formwork and shoring, concert stages, grandstand seating, ski ramps, art projects, access towers, exhibition stands, and half pipes.
Now, let’s take a look at the basic components of scaffoldings, which are used to erect a rigid structure.
Scaffolding Components and Accessories
- Standards – Vertical Scaffolding Part
A standard, also known as upright, is a long pipe or tube that runs vertically and connects the scaffold’s weight to the ground. Each standard is attached to a base plate, or sill, which aids in the even distribution of the weight. The standards are made of aluminum or steel, which are available in different lengths.
- Ledgers – Horizontal Scaffolding Part
Ledgers run horizontally along the length of the scaffold. The placement of ledgers defines the height at which the platforms are staged.
- Base plate
A flat supporting plate or frame at the base of a scaffold is intended to spread the weight of the scaffold over a wider area and increase stability. A steel base plate is where a scaffold’s uprights or standards are mounted. There are three types of base plates-
- Flat Base
- Angle Base
- Spigot or ribbed
- Transoms
The bay width is determined by transoms or bearers that are positioned on top of the ledgers and at an angle to them. By keeping standards in place and supporting boards or planks, main transoms offer support for standards. To provide additional board support, intermediate transoms are positioned next to main transoms. Transoms are of two types-
- Transom beam: They have a single attachment point at each end
- Transom Truss: They have two attachment points at each end
- Scaffold Braces
It is a rigid connection that keeps one scaffolding spare part fixed in relation to another part of a structure. These are of two types-
- Facade bracing: They are attached to the structure’s front face, run diagonally along the length of the frame, and are secured to each platform.
- Cross or transverse brace: This type of brace usually runs diagonally between the inner ledger to the outer standards with a swivel coupler to strengthen the framework.
- Scaffolding decks
Also known as platforms of planks are made from an aluminum frame with plywood board, and hot-dip galvanized steel. They are used as platforms to support a work crew and scaffolding components at height.
- Couplers and Clamps
Scaffold couplers are the most basic component used to build tube-and-coupler scaffolding. This basic fitting is intended to connect two scaffold tubes, and can be used to construct a variety of scaffolding structures or as an addition to prefabricated scaffolding systems.
- Ties
The ties are used because-
- They secure the entire scaffold in order to keep it from collapsing towards or away from the structure.
- They help to keep the individual scaffold standards from buckling. More ties may be required when the load on a scaffold grows to prevent the standards from buckling.
- Toe boards
Steel, wood, or aluminum toe-boards are installed between vertical standards. They reduce the risk of a fire and make the scaffolding more secure. Their design has no openings or gaps between the deck and the toe board.
- Ladder access
To access the platforms of the supported framework; ladders, and stairs are used. The purpose of installing ladders and walkways is to give safe access to heights.
Conclusion
There are many scaffolding components used to erect a reliable scaffolding. Hence, it is important to check scaffolding spare parts, their quality, and their strength before buying.
